Department of Physics started along with the institute in the year 1959. The department has grown from strength to strength along with the institute.
The department started a three year M.Sc. (Tech) programme in 1970 in Engineering Physics with five specializations namely Applied and Modern optics, Transistor circuit analysis and Design, Microwaves, Material sciences and Ionosphere science, with a clause, that at a given time only two specializations to be offered.
Presently department offers a three year M.Sc. (Tech) programme in Engineering Physics with specializations Electronics, Photonics, and Instrumentation. It is proud to say that the M.Sc. (Tech) Engineering Physics-Industry Oriented Course is well received by the industry and R&D establishments.
Notable Incidents in the Department:
- Developed Optical fiber sensors for sensing temperature, displacements, and fiber optic lathe tool dynamometer, etc. under UG/PG project works.
- A pulsed Nitrogen laser pump source was designed and constructed to develop the dye laser systems for wavelength tuning and study the laser action in indigenously synthesized dyes.
- Developed a Holographic gun sight for military rifles and transferred the know-how to BEL, Machilipatnam for production.
- Developed various new labs like Laser Applications, Fiber Optic Communications and Sensing, Microprocessors, Microcontrollers, Optical Data Processing and Holography, Optical System Design, Thin Film Coating, Solar Cell Characterization, Semiconductor Characterization, Digital System Design and Electronic Instrumentation, Optical Metrology, etc.
